Social Credit Score and UBI Advocate Andrew Yang Files to Run for NYC Mayor
In China where such a system is in place, the government has blocked millions of “discredited” people from traveling by plane or rail in an example of the potential abuse it can bring to its subjects.
Former U.S. presidential candidate and socialist visionary Andrew Yang has filed the paper work necessary to run for mayor of New York City, reports NBC New York.
NBC notes:
The filing comes just days after a new poll giving him a slight lead among his fellow Democrats running for mayor.
Yang sparked a huge following in the Democratic primaries for president with his call for universal basic income, though his broad online popularity did not translate to votes as he’d hoped.
But he has been widely reported to be considering a bid for mayor, and the Public Policy Polling survey released Monday was the second poll in recent weeks to show him with a lead over Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams.
Yang would get 17 percent support in a Democratic primary, according to the PPP survey. That gives him a 1-point lead over Adams, with all other candidates at least 10 points back.
As mentioned above, Yang is a staunch believer in a universal basic income system with his non-profit Humanity Forward currently using millions of dollars from Twitter’s Jack Dorsey to implement such programs in up-state New York.
During his presidential campaign he also pushed a Chinese style “social credit score” in which a government-run mobile app would reward Americans with “digital social credits” (DSCs) for state approved behavior.
“As individuals rack up DSCs, they would have both a permanent balance they’ve earned over their lifetime and a current balance. They could cash the points in for experiences, purchases with participating vendors, support for causes, and transfer points to others for special occasions,” Yang’s 2020 campaign website read. “As their permanent balance gets higher, they might qualify for various perks like throwing a pitch at a local ballgame, an audience with their local Congressperson or meeting their state’s most civic-minded athlete or celebrity.”
In China where such a system is in place, the government has blocked millions of “discredited” people from traveling by plane or rail in an example of the potential abuse it can bring to its subjects.
Beyond these controversial ideas, Yang has also recently called for requiring people to prove they’ve been vaccinated before entering venues by showing a bar code on their phones.
Current New York city mayor, Bill De Blasio, recently stated that he “sees the redistribution of wealth as an important factor toward ending structural racism in education,” a clear indication that New York mayoral politics is already embracing philosophies in line with Yang’s.
The New York City mayoral election will take place on June 22, 2021.
