House Votes to Increase Direct Payments to $2,000
The vote comes after President Donald Trump used the Impoundment Control Act of 1974 to demand congress increase the direct payments to Americans and cut out the wasteful spending in the bill.
The House of Representatives voted late on Monday to amend the COVID relief bill to increase the direct payments to Americans from $600 to $2,000.
In need of a two thirds vote, the measure passed in the Democrat controlled House with 275 yeas and 134 nays. The bill now heads to the Republican controlled Senate for consideration.
The vote comes after President Donald Trump used the Impoundment Control Act of 1974 to demand congress increase the direct payments to Americans and cut out the wasteful spending in the bill.
“As President, I have told Congress that I want far less wasteful spending and more money going to the American people in the form of $2,000 checks per adult and $600 per child,” Trump wrote in Sunday statement.
The Impoundment Control Act of 1974 allows the president to make demands to Congress but ultimately can not force congress to perform specific tasks.
President Trump signed the $900 billion COVID relief bill on Sunday, which advanced with a $1.4 trillion spending bill that will keep the government funded through September.
Trump had originally described the bill as a “disgrace” as it was glaringly obviously the legislation was packed with amendments giving billions of dollars to foreign governments and domestic lobbying interests.
“Congress found plenty of money for foreign countries, lobbyists, and special interests while sending the bare minimum to the American people who need it,” Trump said in a statement just hours after the bill had been publicized.
The 5,593 page COVID relief bill was impossible for members of congress to read in its entirety before it was voted on last week, an indictment of the reckless treatment of taxpayer dollars that is all too normal in the halls of congress.
