New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio danced with his wife in Times Square shortly before midnight on Thursday after telling New Yorkers to stay away from the area which normally sees thousands of people gathering to usher in the new year.

De Blasio and NYPD told New Yorkers and out-of-towners to stay away from the area this year, as only a handful of invited guests would be allowed to celebrate in the square.

The scene in Times Square was quite dyspotic this year as those who were allowed to be in the area were fenced into small, personal squares.

Masks were being worn by nearly everyone there including the performing artists and dancers.

The emptiness of the famed square looked like something out of the 2009 History Channel Documentary series Life After People.

In case you forgot, this is what the New Year’s Eve celebration in NYC usually looks like.
