Cuomo to Receive $25k Raise Despite NY’s Huge Budget Crisis
The news of Cuomo’s upcoming raise sparked a flurry of emotional reactions …
In the face of New York’s budget crisis, Governor Andrew Cuomo is set to receive a $25,000 raise to his salary at the start of the new year, cementing his position as the highest paid Governor in the country.
With his state staring down a $63 billion revenue shortfall through 2024, Cuomo’s salary is guaranteed top out at $250,000 in 2021 as the raise was approved by the NY Democrat controlled legislature last year.
A mid-year report from the state’s Division of the Budget projects the Empire State’s tax receipts have plummeted by $14.9 billion, a situation officials tie to loss of revenue due to the COVID-19 pandemic and can undoubtedly be blamed in-part on the state’s response which pushed thousands of businesses into bankruptcy.
“We don’t have a shovel big enough to dig out of [the deficit]. It’s the biggest number in history. We need help from Washington,” the governor said on Tuesday as he continues his push to be rescued by federal funds.
While hundreds of state representatives and judges were denied pay raises, there were a few bureaucrat’s that managed to join the Governor in pocketing more pay next year, including Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul, Attorney General Letitia James, and Comptroller Tom DiNapoli.
Ironically, a Monday report from the NY Enacted Budget Financial Plan panel sated: “Granting raises to public servants, no matter how much they might otherwise deserve them, is simply not possible at this time.”
“We understand the potential for significant budget cuts may be necessary at the state executive level as well if the federal government does not enact additional funding to address the economic hardship caused by COVID-19,” the report said.
The news of Cuomo’s upcoming raise sparked a flurry of emotional reactions:
I think NY residents need to put a stop to that. How dare he take a raise when so many tax payers are out of work

Many took the opportunity to express anger over Cuomo’s decision to direct COVID patients into nursing homes during the start of the outbreak:

Gov. Cuovid: He steals lives, then more tax dollars.

He should pay $25k for every life he lost due to admitting patience to nursing homes.

Killing is hard work.

That’s about $2 per death he caused in New York. Not a bad return
— T Hudson (@RiverBuming) November 18, 2020
That’s like $1 for every covid death in nursing homes; oops!
