Biden Terminates Trump Emergency Border Order, Ends Wall Funding
The move to end the national emergency and cut funding appears to be a promise kept by Biden, who in August said “there will not be another foot of wall constructed on my administration.”
The Biden Administration has terminated a Trump era emergency order declaring an emergency at the U.S. – Mexico border and has vowed to cut off all taxpayer funding for the Trump promised border wall.
“I have determined that the declaration of a national emergency at our southern border was unwarranted,” Biden wrote in a Thursday letter to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
“I have also announced that it shall be the policy of my administration that no more American taxpayer dollars be diverted to construct a border wall, and that I am directing a careful review of all resources appropriated or redirected to that end,” the letter continued.
Former President Donald Trump declared a national emergency as the U.S. southern border in 2019, a move that paved the way to receive billions of dollars to build the border wall he had promised during his time on the presidential campaign trial.
Days prior to leaving office, Trump had extended the national emergency be in effect until February 2022, deeming it necessary to address the “ongoing border security and humanitarian crisis at the southern border.”
The decision to end the national emergency at the border comes after the Biden Administration had placed a temporary halt to border wall construction.
If there is to be no further progress with the border wall, the U.S. – Mexico border would remain largely open.
The move appears to be a promise kept by Biden, who in August said “there will not be another foot of wall constructed on my administration.”
“I’m going to make sure that we have border protection, but it’s going to be based on making sure that we use high-tech capacity to deal with it. And at the ports of entry — that’s where all the bad stuff is happening,” he added.
The use of “high-tech” measures for border security was also parroted by the administration’s pick for Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, Alejandro Mayorkas, who declared during his senate confirmation hearing that a wall may not be the most effective way at preventing illegal immigration.
Mayorkas told the senate that he would “study” whether or not the border wall would remain standing under the new administration.
It is unclear what types of technology could prevent people from physically crossing the largely open souther border, but what is clear is that the Biden administration is making good on its promises to reverse the strict border security policies of the former administration.
Before taking office, Biden had promised to ‘immediately’ send a legislative package to Congress which would provide a pathway to citizenship for some 11 million illegal immigrants. The promise encouraged a wave of migrants to head north through south America in hopes of reaching the U.S.
