In its latest controversial position, America’s oldest medical journal is arguing that gender designations on birth certificates could harm “intersex and transgender people.”

The New England Journal of Medicine, America’s oldest continuously published medical journal, made the argument in a publicly visible article abstract authored by doctors Vadim M. Shteyler, Eli Y. Adashi, and lawyer Jessica A. Clarke, and tweeted out by NEJM on Thursday.

Beyond being offensive to trans and intersex people, the authors say the display of gender offers “no clinical utility.”

“Sex designations on birth certificates offer no clinical utility, and they can be harmful for intersex and transgender people,” the abstract reads.

“Moving such designations below the line of demarcation would not compromise the birth certificate’s public health function but could avoid harm,” the authors add.

While the argument may strike some as bizarre, such a decision was made last year in Tasmania when lawmakers passed a bill to make gender optional on birth certificates.

The NEMJ’s argument also comes after states, including New Jersey, Oregon, California, and Washington, have moved to add a ” gender-neutral” option on state birth certs.

The journal’s position on gender and it’s application to birth certificates is the latest in a string of deep dives into controversial political topics, as RT notes:

In October, the journal issued a veiled political endorsement of the Democrats in the upcoming US election, echoing Joe Biden’s talking points about the Covid-19 pandemic without naming any names.

At the end of September, the NEJM published a study advocating for mandatory vaccinations against Covid-19 under penalty of job loss or home confinement, but stopping short of criminal charges as they would “disadvantage the poor” and minorities.
